Laurence Stephen Lowry's distinctive style of painting developed after he became fascinated by the industrial landscape of Salford and Manchester. His mill scenes and urban landscapes - showing people travelling to and from work, at a fair or a football match - remain his best known subjects, but throughout his long career he also painted atmospheric empty seascapes, and landscapes as well as striking portraits.Lowry had a traditional training as an art student, spending many years attending life drawing classes in the evenings. Until 1952, when he retired, he worked as a rent collector and clerk which helped to give him an intimate knowledge of the people and places he drew, and wherever he travelled he made sketches on the spot. Although he exhibited pictures throughout his life Lowry was in his fifties before his work began to sell regularly. By the time of his death in 1976 he had become one of Britain's best known artists.
