Oil on Canvas 52 x 75cm signed & dated 1850

Marine and landscape painter in oil. Pupil of John Wilson Carmichael (1799-1986) and like his master painting predominatly marine subjects. His work in ship portrature is, indeed, regarded as important; "an excellent and productive specialist in portaits of merchantmen off points of land as far apart as Dover and Cape Town" says C H Ward-Jackson, in his 'Ship Portrait Painters' published by the National Maritime Museum in 1978, doubtless basing his view on the several fine works in the Museum's collection. His work is also represented at the Laing Art Gallery Newcastle upon Tyne, and The Shipley Art Gallery, Gateshead, and South Shields Museum and Art Gallery. Also his marines achieve high prices when sold in Auction, based on his competence alone, and this is a fine example of his work.
